The return of Ulysses

Roman art, 2nd - 3rd century
H.: 1,1 x 0,9 cm

This intaglio represents the legend of Ulysses and his dog Argos.
The return of Ulysses is a moving scene. The hero returns after 20 years away from home to find Penelope, who, thanks to her cunning, has managed to escape her many suitors. On his arrival, the goddess Athena helps Odysseus to go unnoticed by disguising him as a beggar, but his dog recognises him immediately, even after 20 years of absence. This is why today Odysseus' dog has remained a symbol of great loyalty.
